This was the moment Pizza Hut died on Kandahar Airfield. No bugle nor a trumpet sounded. Just a few forlorn spectators watched with dismay as two cranes hauled the infamous fast food container from the Nato base’s boardwalk.
As the sun set over the runway last Tuesday, it became a tiny bit harder to eat unhealthily on Nato’s largest Afghan base. The neighbouring Subway had already suffered a similar fate.
The commander of US and Nato forces in Afghanistan, General Stanley McChrystal, ordered all fast food restaurants to close - ostensibly to free up space and logistics capacity for mission essential supplies.
The soldiers suspect more puritanical motivations, from the personality cult leader who eats one meal a day, runs untold miles and only sleeps a few hours a night.
The good news is TGI Fridays - complete with a life size Yoda, loaded potato skins and flaggons of fizzy pop - is very much still open
